End Bell Play For Bearings

  • 1.  End Bell Play For Bearings

I have a couple of motors that decided the front end bell bearings did not want to work any more. So instead of acting like bearings decided they would act like bushings without informing me. Bearing locked up and spun in the end bell.
Not wanting to spend almost $500.00 for a motor... does anyone know of a speedy sleeve or shim I can insert between the new bearing and the end bell?

I have used Loctite liquid sleeve retainer to set a couple spun bearings before

Not sure how sloppy it is? If very sloppy you can epoxy it or if just a slight to medium amount, I used to take a sharp center punch & dimple all the way around & or more in the area worn to raise the metal kind of like knurling it. This method has worked well for me in the past & have also used this method when a bearing race spins in a brake rotor on cars & trucks.

Despite repeatably center punching the same places it will not raise to the occasion. This a S.Q. SE 20 year old machine.
Epoxy came to mind ...but how do you center it?

Curt, I know this is in a post but you said you center punched in the same place? If so that is the issue, you have to center punch all the areas of where the bearing seats. You also mentioned how to center bearing & would guess the damage is beyond this approach? You can put bearing on shaft, then apply epoxy just before final motor assembly.

I have never obtained this myself, but I believe slightly oversized (outer race) bearings are available for just the purpose described in the above post.

Just to be clear it was center punched so it was as if it had been knurled. That was not enough so deeper punches in the same holes were done. I just want to know how to center it using epoxy.

Thanks for that Winston. I will check with the bearing house.

Sorry, I can't help.  I was going to offer you my spare motors, but I don't have any of those.
