ATM Theft

Unfortunately, due to a lack of security on one of my ATM's, it was stolen during a break in on November 11, 2018. I've been waiting for the full video back from the RCMP but here is the video from the camera facing the front door. I didn't realize how easy a floor mounted ATM is to pull off its base. My suggestion to all owners is to purchase ATM armour and bolt it tight against a wall so the thieves can't get a wire rope or chain around it.

    Richard,
That's unfortunate !! they probably did more damage than the money they were able to take. It should not be this easy to yank an ATM !!

I run an ATM route in SoCal and I only had 1 unsuccessful theft attempt in the last 3 years. What did you use to bold the ATM down ?? I use & recommend wedge anchors (Red Head or Simpson Titen) with some high strength epoxy if the concrete slab is thin (4" +/-). Always use the biggest size anchors possible and embed them as deep as possible in the concrete floor. The nut should be tightened per the torque rating. I've also used 1/2" thick pre-drilled steel plate inside the bottom of the ATM cabinet for the machines I install outdoors. If the ATM is installed correctly, the bottom of cabinet will shear off before the anchors break if someone tries to pull it with a truck.

You can also get an ATM enclosure (half sleeve). They do make those heavy duty as an added security for high risk locations. Google: Gorilla ATM, Dash ATM and TPI for those enclosures.

If your ATM communication is thru a wireless device (not Ethernet/router), use DPL wireless unit with the tilt, vibration and door alarms. Excellent wireless units with a built in alarm & notification system. Those units will also enable you to monitor & restart the ATM remotely.  I believe DPL wireless is made in Canada.

    Hani,

The strength of the bolts holding down the ATM didn't really matter as the metal is so weak that it did shear off right at the base.

Here is the heavy duty steel armor that I installed, now to make sure a cable can't be wrapped around the machine.

    Richard,

So sorry about the theft, but I do LIKE that protective sleeve!!
Aside from a wall mount, this is the best security I have seen for a free standing ATM.

    Richard,

Sorry for you loss. ATM, glass, door frame and other damage as the machine bounced it's way to (and through) the front door. Very costly.

As a warning to the potential and new owners, this can also happen with bill changers. Verify how all your money vending machines are securely mounted, as part of your due diligence or after ownership improvements.

    Richard & others,

I agree with the others responding to your post.  When old timers talk about the good ole days before alarm systems ... I remember what it was like before I specifically put in our first alarm system.  Car wash bay broken into: coin box with all the 14 gauge wires pulled out of concrete block wall with conduit fittings ... all with a vehicle pull like in your case.  A competitor had his large bill changer pulled that way & it was found later totally ruined washed up on shore of our Missouri River.

So this is not just a big city potential as we are much more rural.  Also the "100% cashless" advocates should not pretend like they have the solution.  If you live a less fear driven life than many ... where someone may become jealous or feel they want to get rid of you politically or if in some other way they perceive you in their "not liking way" ... unexpected senseless damage can happen to your property.   Especially, if they know you do not have enough defense capabilities by way of manpower, adequate alarm system triggering-response time & good enough quality video footage.  I personally remember back in the '70s where I had a pretty good idea of the "who" but not enough quality evidence to hold them (as my dear mama would call them der rascals) properly responsible!

As long as this is about criminal behavior somewhat ... I remember once "a down on their luck poor" family who just had a tear-jerker article written about them with a local reporter fussing on & on.  That was back in the middle 60s when my folks ran our laundromat.  The man of the family must have been delusional about his new found celebrity status because he after he clearly himself started a fire in one of our dryers ... he then tried to collect big insurance money.  The first thing he said to my folks is that he knew people in the media ... if we did not give him the exorbitant amount he was asking.  The local insurance agent (to his credit) actually personally came down & did the work of refusing (with explanation) to pay the person based on the evidence & was not fearful of the media at all.

    Richard,
Oh man...the cabinet sheared off fairly quickly from what I saw on the video.
The half sleeve armor looks great
