Laundromat Scam

Has a guy EMAIL me and ask for a price on WDF.  He said he is a caterer and will have table clothes and napkins that need to be cleaned on a regular basis.  He agreed on a price of $450 for the first order and said he will mail a check and someone would drop off the items.

2 days later I get an overnighted check for $3500.  Red flags go up although up until this time I was already suspicious of how the whole process went down.

Did some quick research on the web and the scam is that they over pay you and expect you to send a refund.  Maybe the check is good and they are trying to bring money into the country but more likely its a back check.

Our response via email was that we could either send the check back or deposit it and hold for future orders.  Guess what his reply was?  Crickets.......

Anyway, I think they target what they perceive to be and easier and less intelligent target.  Guess they don't know the caliber of mat owners.

Several months back, about a year, I received a text asking for WDF for about 1000 jackets, heavy duty construction type.  Threw all kinds of red flags.  I texted back several questions and of course he was out of town and a driver would come by drop them off, blah, blah, blah.  Nothing came of it.  If they are local I figured large orders should be handled in person.  Just be suspicious of any similar emails or texts.

Why not take the cashiers check, deposit it and wait for the request to return a portion of the "overpayment."  Inform the customer that only "credit" is available for overpayments or refunds.

I must be missing the risk here. Are they getting information on your bank accounts so they can make unauthorized withdrawals at a later date?  How does the scam work if you don't send them back any money?

They may want try to get the refund for the overpayment before the check clears - you pay them the money back and the check will bounce causing you a bounce check fee.and the refund on the bad check

I have gotten the friendly positive "movie star quality" voice calling... stating he or she is just asking you to renew the advertising you did previously with them.  There was not previous advertising but apparently it was a deceptive technique that has been successful for them.  A quick hang up kind of makes up for the hang ups from computer generated calls that you don't pick up fast enough for the genius computer ROBO calling technique.  I wonder how years of programming training allowed them to become so so so very highly skilled.

In reply to Larry Larsen's post:  In this situation there is no laundry work to be done. It's a scam from the start.  If you deposit the check, it will be returned unpaid, resulting in an unpaid check fee to you (usually about $35).  In some cases these checks have "cleared", but were later found to be fraudulent. The depositor then had to return the amount of the check to the bank that had credited it to his account. This has happened weeks after the initial deposit.

Lesson to be learned: There is never a legitimate request for a business to accept a large check for much more than the service provided, and then ask for the difference to be returned as change.

Every part of it is a scam.  The check is drawn from a hacked account.  You would  be doing the "check writer" a big favor by calling them and alerting them that someone has hacked their account.  Even the postage on the envelope is likely from postageOnLine, and was purchased with stolen cc info from whomever is listed as the return address.
