Coin Laundry Association (CLA) President/CEO Brian Wallace provided an update on the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on the laundry industry after the weekend on Monday, March 23, 2020. View the video below:

The following states have classified laundromats as “essential” businesses. Therefore, laundromats will be allowed to remain open:

  • New York
  • California
  • Illinois
  • New Jersey
  • Nevada
  • Connecticut
  • Pennsylvania
  • Ohio
  • Kentucky
  • Delaware
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • West Virginia
  • Indiana

We’ve also received late word that Michigan and Louisiana have also added laundromats to the essential-business list but hasn’t been confirmed at press time

Lobbying efforts are underway with the Department of Homeland Security’s CISA agency to identify an essential critical infrastructure workforce, including laundromats. States will still make their own decisions regarding which businesses are essential, but states are increasingly deferring to the federal CISA guidance so we are working hard to include the laundromat industry.

The laundry community has been remarkably active and vocal on the CLA Connect Open Forum and on Facebook. The CLA team continues to receive phone calls and emails, and we are making every effort to answer your questions. We are thankful that fellow laundry owners, manufacturers, and supporting service businesses have been offering advice, signage, downloads, and other information including:

  • Cleaning advice for machines and surfaces
  • Cleaning advice for laundry carts and other tools handled by customers and staff
  • Handwashing
  • Directing customers and demonstrating excellent customer care
  • Social distancing and store layouts and policies to accommodate this

One of most discussed pieces of advice is to ask customers to exercise “Wash-Dry-Go” where they can do their laundry, but they reserve folding to be accomplished at home.
