Our laundromat and car wash is "loosely attended" as we live in an attached apartment to the laundromat.  We are open over 14 hours every day with my husband and I running it ourselves.  We have a pretty good security system, so we can keep an eye on things from our apartment.

Currently we have signs posted everywhere that say "For Assistance, Call or Text" with my cell phone number on it.  My cell phone is on me 24/7, and on the rare occasion when I've missed a call I call the person back to make sure everything is okay.

I would like to know what other unattended laundromats are posting as signage for their customers.  With our current wording we are getting calls from people just wanting change, or to ask silly questions.  Would it be appropriate to change the signage to something along the lines of "In case of emergency or to report machine malfunction call or text ###?"  Any input is appreciated.

We're unattended. Our signs give 2 cell numbers that they can call, text, & an email address.

 The calls vary.  But nowhere near a point that it's too many or irrelevant.

I like your term 'loosely attended'! Sounds like you got a pretty good thing going. If I was you I wouldn't mind those calls. It's a small price to pay---- you don't have employees and the costs and paperwork and headaches associated with being an attended Laundromat! In my travels I have never preferred using an unattended mat, but probably would like yours knowing I could get any question answered or problem solved. And if there was another unattended mat near you, I'm sure people would find yours better because you are nearby and take care of problems. That's excellent customer service even if you are not an attended mat in my opinion

We are also unattended. We have a sticker on each machine showing the machine# and under it. Its says: NEED HELP? PLEASE CALL OR TXT: phone number. We also have a lable on the card/change kiosk that says the same thing. So far it has worked well. Most people tell me, after they call with a problem that they like the fact that someone actually answers the phone and can solve there issue.  On the other hand some people just call us to complain about things that are really silly. But it the later doesn't happen too often just from those customers that are starved for attention at home probably.

if one day I go unattended I will do just what you are
 doing  I'd like to go unattended some hours during the day, just a thought at this point, but I'd like to save on payroll. I'm always learning  something on this forum and getting good ideas.

We own 2 unattended laundromats, open 15 and 16 hours daily. Our signage says "For machine issues text or call #". Our restrooms are access controlled and there is separate signage explaining how to register for a code with text only, no codes are given over the phone. We do get more frequent calls on/near holidays and directions. We have started adding this info to our voicemail messages. In general, people are surprised and pleased when a human answers the phone and their questions. We view it as a small price to pay for the freedom of unattended stores.

I switched over from providing a cell number to a virtual number through G0-daddy or there are others.  Couple of reasons.

1. I have another business and when my cell number was associated to the store and google business listing anyone that I call that has an android phone the caller ID shows up as Laundromat.  Not cool when you are calling high level business people.

2. Not really comfortable with people having my personal cell phone number.

One of the unexpected benefits was that when I get a call the caller ID is the mat so I can decide if I want to answer.  if not, it leaves and voice and text message on the App with a return phone number.

Other benefit is if I go on vacation I can input the number for the person covering me so I never get calls on vacation.  That's HUGE for me.

$3.99/mo.  Money well spent IMHO

We have 2 unattended stores with signage similar to what has been suggested. We recently changed over to virtual, similar to John, where many general questions can be answered (location,hours,etc). Should they choose to speak with someone immediately, there is an option for that. It has been very beneficial and fields the bulk of our calls.
Theresa- I would be interested in learning more about your access controlled restroom. I've been looking for something along those lines. Can you provide more detail or we can discuss further off the forum.

We have a 'courtesy phone' that is one of those no dial phones on the wall without any number buttons. You pick it up and it auto dials a virtual phone number that hits my cell phone and house phone through forwarding and then into a voicemail. Our signage states to leave a message for any machine problems. We have stickers on our machines stating to use the courtesy phone for issues. If we call anyone back on their number we use a virtual line through CallCentric that makes it look like it's coming from the laundromat number even though we are calling on our cell phones. Noone has our direct numbers, but anyone can pick up the courtesy phone and reach us without having their own phone. It works for us, your mileage may vary but we get very little in the way of random question calls.

As long as this veered into the phone # availability realm ... those of us who have changing schedules of people on duty & on standby ... let's not forget simple call forwarding to our office phone to our cell phone.  It is an extremely simple process to have happen & not happen for a short time duration.

I just changed signage in all my mats; Having problem with machine? Please fill out of order card and place on machine for refund. All other calls (my cell phone) you must leave message and state what location you are at. It really cut down on the calls. I don't answer anymore, got tired of the 15 minute stupid calls. Seems if people know they have to leave a message they only call for important things.
